Burst Pipe Cleanup: What to Do Right Now (and What It Takes to Dry Out)

October 15, 2026·3 min read

When a pipe bursts, shut off the main water valve first, then call for burst pipe cleanup right away. Every hour of standing water spreads damage into drywall, subfloors and insulation, and mold can start growing within 24 to 48 hours.

Step 1: Stop the water

  • Find the main shutoff valve. It's usually where the water line enters the house, often in the basement, garage or utility room, or near the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
  • Open the faucets on the lowest floor to drain the pressure and the water left in the lines.
  • Turn off the water heater if the hot water side burst.

Step 2: Make it safe

  • If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, turn off power to those areas at the breaker, but only if you can reach it without standing in water.
  • Watch for sagging ceilings. A bulging ceiling can hold a lot of water and come down suddenly.

Step 3: Protect your belongings and your claim

  • Move furniture, electronics, rugs and documents out of the wet area.
  • Take photos and video of the burst pipe, the standing water and every damaged item before anything is thrown away.
  • Call your insurance company to open a claim.

What professional burst pipe cleanup involves

  1. Water extraction. Truck-mounted or portable extractors remove standing water from floors and carpet.
  2. Moisture mapping. Moisture meters and thermal imaging find water hidden inside walls, under flooring and in ceiling cavities.
  3. Removing what can't be saved. Soaked carpet pad, swollen baseboards and saturated drywall below the wet line usually come out so the cavity can dry.
  4. Structural drying. Commercial dehumidifiers and air movers run for several days, and moisture is checked daily until materials reach dry standard.
  5. Antimicrobial treatment to stop mold growth on affected framing.
  6. Documentation: moisture logs, photos and an itemized scope your insurance adjuster can work from.

Why winter is burst pipe season on Long Island and in NYC

Pipes in exterior walls, unheated garages, crawl spaces and attics are the ones that freeze. When the ice expands, the pipe splits, and it often doesn't leak until it thaws. That's why so many burst pipes are discovered the morning after a cold snap. Keep the heat at 55°F or higher, let faucets on outside walls drip during deep freezes, and insulate exposed pipes.

Don't do this

  • Don't use a household vacuum on standing water.
  • Don't run fans alone and assume it's dry. Fans move surface moisture but won't dry wall cavities.
  • Don't paint over water stains or close up walls until moisture readings confirm the structure is dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first when a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve immediately, then turn off electricity to any wet areas if it's safe to reach the breaker. Open faucets to drain the lines, move valuables out of the water, and photograph the damage before cleanup starts.

How long does it take to dry out after a burst pipe?

Most homes need 3 to 5 days of professional drying with commercial dehumidifiers and air movers. Drying time depends on how long the water sat, how far it spread and the materials involved, and it should be confirmed with moisture readings, not by touch.

Does homeowners insurance cover burst pipe damage?

Sudden and accidental pipe bursts are usually covered by standard homeowners policies, while damage from long-term leaks or lack of maintenance often isn't. Document everything and call your insurer promptly. A restoration company can provide the moisture logs and photos adjusters ask for.
